Mr. Russell B. Hyder,
Jewelry Manufacturing Arts Manager and Instructor,
has been with GIA since 1998. He has instructed in the fields of the
Graduate Jewelry Program and Applied Jewelry Arts Program inclusive
of all around bench techniques for repair and manufacture; stone setting;
fabrication; casting; mold making; comprehensive
wax techniques; engraving and Cad/Cam. He has helped produce and write
the Cad/Cam program for the past five years.
He
has 35 years of jewelry repair and manufacturing experience and holds
a BA degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado. His
career started in Boulder, Colorado where he apprenticed under two master
jewelers. He has managed a jewelry trade shop for 6 years and owned
his own trade shop for 10. After doing independent contractor work nationwide
in the US, he joined GIA to become an instructor; product manager, and
for the past two years, the manager for the Jewelry Manufacturing Arts
department at GIA.
At
GIA, he coordinated and produced course text materials for both programs
to keep GIA technically up to date. He has been responsible for acquiring
computer software for Cad/Cam; laser welders; a computer driven engraving
machine; a CNC 4-axis mill and various educational hardware to make
the GIA learning experience second to none.
In
recognizing two major changes in manufacturing over the past few years,
i.e., laser welding and Cad/Cam, the need for qualified designers and
manufacturing techniques have changed remarkably. These two areas have
changed the way designers can think about designing and manufacturing
methods for the end product. It is a much more efficient way in respect
to figuring out costs and downstream production time.
