GIA’s
8th Gemstone Gathering was presented by Mr. David Baker at GIA Thailand
Campus on the 29th of November.
Mr. Baker’s
topic for the evening focused on diamond cutting facilities in New York
from past to present. Mr. Baker took attendees on a whirlwind tour of
New York’s diamond cutting facilities from the early 1960’s
to present day, the complex field of diamond cutting is traditionally
very secretive and it was beneficial for the attendees to see some of
the equipment and procedures employed by the New York diamond trade.
The main
focus of his presentation was on both interesting and unique diamond
crystals and laser sawing, the latter having gained prominent and widespread
use amongst today’s successful diamond manufacturers. It was especially
interesting to note how laser technologies have developed rapidly over
the years, starting from a crude and dangerous tool to one which represents
one of the greatest technological advances for the diamond cutter since
the advent of the conventional diamond saw in the 1930s. In the hands
of a competent operator, the laser saw can save time and money, and
can greatly reduce the risk associated with conventional cutting methods
and makes available an almost limitless assortment of fancy shapes.
Mr. Baker’s
presentation was enjoyed by over 60 participants and as usual students
and trade members had the chance to socialize and mingle after the talk
finished.
