Over 50 attendees of GIA’s Fifth Gemstone gathering were treated to a highly charged and energetic presentation from one of the worlds leading gemologists.

Mr. John Koivula, Chief Gemologist, GIA Carlsbad, California who is perhaps best known for his work with the late Dr. Gubelin in the creation of the Photoatlas of Inclusions in Gemstones series of books, gave a talk entitled “Windows in the Earth: The Microworld of Gems.”

Mr. Koivula has an extensive gemological background; he has authored and co-authored over 800 articles for a variety of trade and industry publications, and is responsible for early pioneering work with photomicrography and illumination techniques used with the microscope.

The charismatic John Koivula delivered a thoroughly enjoyable and energetic presentation focusing on how minute microscopic clues can help in the separation of heat treated and natural gems, additionally he demonstrated the importance of varied illumination techniques and viewing angles when studying inclusion scenes.

Mr. Koivula’s slide show displayed remarkable and enchanting pictures created by the world’s premier unrivalled artist “Mother Nature” allowing participants a glimpse into the fascinating internal world of gemstones.
