Biography:


In his capacity as senior industry analyst, Russell Shor writes analyses of the complex political and economic issues facing today’s gemstone and jewelry industries. He is part of the team that publishes Gems & Gemology, GIA’s award-winning quarterly and also contributes to various other GIA publications, and works with the GIA’s Education, Research, Development, and Marketing departments on numerous industry issues.


For more than 25 years, Shor has worked with all levels of the diamond industry, from the mines to the major dealers and retailers.


Shor was most recently editor-in-chief of GemKey magazine and GemKey.com, where he headed the information and community functions for that on-line service. Before that, from 1995 to 1998, he was editor of New York Diamonds. He is also well known to many in the industry for his reporting as diamonds editor of JCK magazine from 1980 to 1995. In that position, Shor traveled to all major diamond-processing centers and most colored gem and pearl-producing areas.


Shor authored the 1993 book Connections: A History of the Diamond Trade and Its People. He has been a featured speaker at numerous industry events, including both the 1991 and 1999 International Gemological Symposiums.


Shor has a degree in journalism from Temple University and did graduate work in international relations at the University of Pennsylvania. He has won three Jesse H. Neal Awards for business journalism, The Richard T. Liddicoat Journalism Award and five first-place awards for reporting from the New York Business Press Association.

Synopsis:

In their presentation Mr. Shor will present an overview of the current world gem and jewelry markets, focusing on the political and economic forces affecting today’s gemstone market, and the opportunities afforded by the changes in today’s marketplace.

Biography:


Margaret A. De Young, MBA, G.G., Marketing Manager, Lab Liaison at GIA. De Young is a graduate of The University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign with a BA in Anthropology and an MBA in Marketing from DePaul University in Chicago.


In the jewelry trade since the early 1990’s, De Young has worked in many segments of the industry. She began in a small independent retail store, moved into management in a large upscale retail chain, after which she went to work for seven years as a diamond wholesaler marketing and selling diamonds. After completing her MBA, De Young combined her past experiences and joined the GIA.

Synopsis:

Ms. De Young will speak about how the GIA Laboratory is responding to the new opportunities and challenges presented by these changes. Her talk will include new Laboratory initiatives including new strategies and services.
