The GIA Thailand GemFest was held on the 16th of September 2009 at the Impact Exhibition Center during the 44th Bangkok Gem and Jewelry Show.

The speaker for the event was Richard W. Hughes, senior vice president of Gemstone Acquisition & Marketing NCS Group Co., Ltd.,  who delivered a presentation entitled, "People and Places: New Directions in Gemology."

Mr. Hughes talked about his gemological travels, covering ground that spans from Manhattan and Russia's emerald mines to Madagascar's sapphire and Tajikistan's remote ruby and spinel deposits.

"Travel is an essential ingredient of gemology," Hughes said. "Gemologists are privileged to work with some of the most stunning objects from all over the planet, which are truly singular marvels of extraordinary beauty and wonder."

Participants in attendance at the event thoroughly enjoyed Dick’s presentation which stimulated a variety of interesting questions from the audience. GIA Thailand would like to thank Mr. Richard Hughes for his continued support of GIA activities and his never ending enthusiasm and passion that he shares so freely.
